Independent republic on the coast of Africa, bordered by Senegal and Guinea. Guinea-Bissau was formerly Portuguese Guinea, becoming independent Sept. 10, 1974. After a decade of
one-party rule, Guinea-Bissau began to liberalize in the mid-1980s, and
the first multiparty elections were held in 1994. |
